A Car Alternative

I love this (and I want one)..a trike with a cover...it even has electric assist to help on hills. I only hope we'll see more of this type of vehicle in the near future. Check out the short video (below) to see it in action; click here to go to their website.

Kewl! Very innovative and I want one too but the price is a bit prohibitive even without electric assist.

Further reading indicated that the Rainshadow shell project was unfortunately postponed due the the current state of the economy. It seems like a chicken/egg situation. This type of thing is exactly what we need in our current situation but would seem to only flourish in a booming economy....which means that it can only justify itself to the principled wealthy folk. It seems like there are some structural issues that need addressing that incremental change simply cannot address.

Jeff,

I see what you mean...too bad...this really is what we need. I'm also intrigued by the Rhoades car (http://www.rhoadescar.com) but none seem to have enclosures. The electric assist is nice, too.

Joe, Thanks for pointing out the Rhoadescar. It is encouraging to see these sorts of efforts.

Reading the Lightfoot electric assist page indicates that the motor/hub and battery add about 20 lbs...not too bad.

This statement was interesting:

"A possible drawback of electric assist is that, after using it for a while, pedal-only bikes will seem slow."

....which was at least one factor (of many) for the explosion of the automobile.
