Five Quotes from Nelson Mandela

Mr. Mandela was born 93 years ago today and the world is a better place because of him. To read a previous post quoting him click here

“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.”

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

Good quotes. I especially like the one about "rising every time we fall" - very inspiring for those with skinned knees, like me.

I liked the quote about having to learn to hate, and in turn, able to learn to love. I may have to post that in my classroom this year. Thanks for sharing. I am in awe of Nelson Mandela!

I'll cast my vote for the nature of "impossibility," as the one I have to confront most often.

Other: That's impossible
Me: But I just did it.
Other: That doesn't count, because you're exceptional.
Me: That's right. I'm a God beyond you mere mortals.
Other: Hey, just who the hell do you think are?
Me: Just an ordinary guy. So much for your excuse.
Other: Shut up, shut up, shut up!
